Seraphic Fire

Last night, I was privileged to attend one of the most impressive concerts I've heard in a long time. Seraphic Fire, a group formed by Notre Dame alum and founder of The Undertones Patrick Quigley, offered a free performance on campus last night. Their music was breath-taking.

They performed traditional sacred music pieces, as well as fancifully beautiful tunes like Tomorrow Shall Be My Dancing Day (a favorite of mine since high school) and Lo, How a Rose E'er Blooming.

One of the best pieces was a solo performance of There is a Balm in Gilead, a traditional African-American spiritual. The black singer gave a mesmerizing performance that evoked the rich history of spirituals and African-American music, while absolutely rending my heart with his mournfully beautiful voice and melody. Fantastic.

Their presentation was also uniquely phenomenal - more than once, the choir members walked through the audience, surrounding us at moments in a cocoon of exquisite sound. Besides their absolutely perfect voices and great song selections, the presentation set this concert apart as one of the best I've heard.

Never Grow Old
was excellent though not one of my overall favorites, but it's the only video I found that shows Seraphic Fire performing one of the songs that I heard last night:

Enjoy,
Lilly
