Day 2:
Woke for Mass at the Cathedral at 9. The night before, a big group from the program all went to Mass together in the Cathedral at 5:30. It was really cool to hear Mass in Spanish and to see the big Notre Dame crowd filling up the small side chapel where Mass was held. I think we out-numbered the locals.
Spent that day wandering and purchasing cell phones & other necessities, and moved in with my host mom, Charo, in the evening.
Day 3:
Placement test for Spanish at 9 a.m., then grabbed café and went wandering. After lunch at the Fundación (the Spanish center for international students where I have my classes), a group of girls decided to go exploring. We walked down by the Rio Tajo, the big river that surrounds the city on 3 sides, and meandered through scenic streets. Took some fabulous pictures, available on Facebook.
In the evening, I went to Rosary and Mass with Charo at her parish, Santa Barbara. I particularly enjoyed the Litany we prayed in Spanish... the words are different but the meanings are the same. It´s beautiful to see the universality.
Day 4:
In the afternoon, I visited the local Opus Dei center with Charo and a friend of hers. Enjoyed meeting many Spanish girls and watching the local girls´ club in action. They were all so welcoming and I felt right at home.
At the ¨Fund¨ a celebratory dinner was held to open the academic semester. The Spanish food was plentiful and DELICIOUS. A group of singers entertained us with traditional Spanish songs- the best moments included Spanish singers trying to dance with some of the Notre Dame girls, and the loud audience participation for ¨Cielito Lindo¨. Represent.
